Overview
The gathering of new knowledge serves as a cornerstone of the nation’s identity and strength. Each year the U.S. government recognizes this by investing millions into research, with a firm understanding that the advancement of science and technology allows the U.S. to compete globally, especially in the world economy.
This bears eminently true in the computer field. The advancement of personal computers during the 1990s ignited a massive economic revival and cemented U.S. status as a technological vanguard. Though the dot.com boom has since subsided, it underscored the government’s need to continually foster research and development.
With this in mind the government is now focusing on advances in perfecting alternative forms of energy. The development of say solar or wind power creates new economic markets and improves U.S. security by making the country less dependent on other nations for energy needs.
Through the work of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) the nation has a better understanding of global warming. NASA’s satellites are able to monitor melting polar icecaps, allowing scientists to get a better understanding of global warming’s long-term effects.
And the study of biology improves the nation’s health. Constant breakthroughs are being made in eradicating many life-altering diseases, including cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
